Interactive Representations of Information and Knowledge

Overall reflection

Overall reflection

From the final draft, my classmates suggested that I could either use slider or interactive map to present my ideas. I think that slider is more appropriate for describing chronological sequences; while interactive map offers users a quick overview. The latter better serves the purpose of the design of my assignment.

In this course, I have learnt a great deal about the literature and theories with regard to interactive learning. In addition to the theoretical enrichment, I appreciate the practical side of this course. I learnt how to design and produce my own flash learning programme. Using flash as a learning media is much better than learning via traditional methods, as it enables learners to learn by their own pace and interest.

I encountered the following difficulties in dealing with this individual assignment. Scripts in flash programme are quite difficult to master. I have to refer to some additional references in the library to master the necessary scripts for the assignment. The speed and the response of the blog server were very slow, especially during the peak hours, i.e. evenings. This made the upload process very slow and retarded the efficiency. I suggest utilizing the CITE resources to open a blog server, instead of using an overseas blog server.

In this course, no matter during the lessons or other non-lesson time, my classmates have been very helpful and provide a lot of positive contributions and comments. This convinces me that using blog as a teaching and learning platform is very successful.

Reflection for session 5 : What is a “StoryBoard” ?

April 25th, 2007 by lhwong in General · No Comments

A series of diagrams that show how a project will look when completed.

a series of rough sketches that show the plot, action, characters, and setting of a film, used before actual filming begins.

a small sketch that represents every page in a Web site. Like a flowchart, a storyboard shows the relationship of each page to the other pages in the site. Storyboards can be helpful when planning a Web site because they allow you to visualize how each page in the site is linked to the others pages.

Reflection for session 4 : Why Interactive Representation ?

April 25th, 2007 by lhwong in General · No Comments

Multimedia learning hypothesis: People can learn more deeply from words and pictures than from words alone

Visuals and text together take advantage of the full capacity of human for processing of information.

Pictures and words are qualitatively different, however, they can complement each other.

Learners mentally integrate pictures and text into single internal representations.

Reflection for session 3 : What is “Flash” ?

April 25th, 2007 by lhwong in General · No Comments

What is Flash?

  • Macromedia Flash is a multimedia graphics program specially for use on the Web
  • Flash enables you to create interactive “movies” on the Web
  • Flash uses vector graphics, which means that the graphics can be scaled to any size without losing clarity/quality
  • Flash does not require programming skills and is easy to learn

Flash vs. Animated Images and Java Applets

  • Animated images and Java applets are often used to create dynamic effects on Web pages.
  • The advantages of Flash are:
  • Flash loads much faster than animated images
  • Flash allows interactivity, animated images do not
  • Flash does not require programming skills, java applets do

Reflection for session 2 : What makes good visual display (in learning and teaching) ?

April 25th, 2007 by lhwong in General · No Comments

Effective teaching and learning

Effective teaching and learning takes place when a variety of teaching strategies are provided in the classroom and when the emphasis is on gaining understanding rather than just right answers.  Different methods are appropriate for different areas of knowledge.

Students have different learning preferences i.e. some are more visual learners, some like working in groups, some prefer the written word.

A monotonous diet of the same teaching style will cause even the most keen student to lost interest.

The need for variety

Effective learning activities are those that require students to process information rather than transfer information or answer questions without understanding.

Therefore a good visual display should highlight the“variety”of your learning objective.
